EVs are safe! But safety must be priority too
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a critical piece in decarbonising the road transport sector. EV adoption is increasing at a rapid pace across the globe, including in India. In FY2025, more than 1.9 million vehicles were sold, comprising 7.49% of the total vehicle sales in India. It has risen to 2.44 million in FY2026. The increase can be attributed to a confluence of factors, including favourable government policies, more choices offered by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), increasing consumer awareness around environmental benefits, total cost of ownership advantages, and more. This momentum needs to be sustained for India to meet its target of 30% EV sales by 2030 and the broader 2047 energy independence goal, for which a near-complete transition of new vehicle sales across segments would be required by 2043.
